Border Patrol agents have seized 230 pounds of cocaine worth about $7.3 million found inside the tires of a white Chevy truck near Westmorland in Imperial County.
Authorities searched the truck Sunday night at the California 86 checkpoint and found “anomalies” when they scanned three large tires sitting in the rear part of the vehicle’s truck bed, according to agent Ronald Nazareno.
He said the seizure was the result of a routine inspection at the desert highway checkpoint and that a canine team first flagged the truck. He called the size of the seizure “pretty common.”
“It always fluctuates,” Nazareno said. “One day you can have a body carrier carrying just a couple ounces, and the next day the you can have a 230-pound seizure.”
The 25-year-old male driver was arrested in connection with the 82 sealed packages of cocaine. Nazareno said no additional identifying information was available.
