Long Beach man pleads no-contest in his mother’s murder

A Long Beach man who played out a movie-like drama by slashing a picture of his mother before taking a knife to her throat pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and will now serve 16 years to life in prison.

Douglas Fredrick, 64, entered the plea on Monday. Prosecutors said he had grown increasingly tired of caring for his 87-year-old mother, Dorothy Ellen Armstrong, and killed her in May 2011,  the Long Beach Press-Telegram reported.

Before killing her, prosecutors said Fredrick slashed a portrait of his mother, leaving cuts over her heart — an act of violence that occurred the same day that the assisted living center where Armstrong had been living asked him to pick up her belongings.

Two days later, authorities told the newspaper, Fredrick killed his mother in the apartment they then shared.

At his sentencing Monday,  Fredrick apologized:  “I am terribly sorry,” he said, “for the events that took place last May.”
