A Hesperia man has been jailed on suspicion of severely injuring his 4-month-old son.
Albert Martinez, 20, was booked into the Central Detention Center in San Bernardino for investigation of willful cruelty to a child, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release. His bail was set at $350,000.
Sheriff’s deputies and paramedics were called to the home in the 14500 block of Juniper Street, where Martinez said the baby was having trouble breathing.
The child was taken to Desert Valley Hospital in Victorville, where medical staff determined the child had pneumonia but could not find any evidence of abuse, the Sheriff’s Department said.
The boy was then taken to the Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital, where doctors determined that the child was suffering from severe brain trauma consistent with child abuse, the department said.
With that information, detectives with the sheriff’s Crimes Against Children Detail arrested Martinez, the department said.
The boy remains in serious condition but is stable, the department said.
