PERRIS: ‘Chop shop’ discovered, 2 arrested

09 Apr

A traffic stop for expired registration tags led to the discovery of a “chop shop” for stolen vehicles in Perris, sheriff’s officials say.

Eighteen-year-old Osvaldo Barajas was arrested at 4:44 p.m. Friday at Perris Boulevard and Walnut Street and booked for investigation of possessing methamphetamine, stolen property and a weapons violation, jail records show. His bail is $25,000.

Barajas initially was detained on suspicion of driving without a license, Sgt. Victor Tejeda said in a written statement. Deputies then discovered that the Jeep he’d been driving had been reported stolen, according to the statement.

Deputies served a search warrant at his home along the 1300 block of California Avenue and found a chop shop containing several stolen vehicles and stolen automotive parts, Tejeda wrote.

Arrested there for investigation of several charges, including possessing methamphetamine, burglary tools and stolen vehicles was 40-year-old Arturo Barajas, the statement says.
