BREA – A family of five was displaced after a fire destroyed their single-story home Monday night, causing $400,000 in damage, a fire official said.

The father was home and called 911 to report the fire shortly after 9:30 p.m. in the 400 block of South Walnut Avenue near Elm Street, Brea-Fullerton Fire Division Chief Tom Schultz said.

He managed to escape unharmed before firefighters arrived, Schultz said.

The rest of the family, including a mother, two daughters and a son, were not home.

It took firefighters about 50 minutes to bring the fire under control and another hour and a half to get all the hot spots, Schultz said, adding that about 55 firefighters from Brea, Fullerton, Anaheim and the Orange County Fire Authority responded to the fire.

The fire destroyed the house, the attached garage and the patio. A home to the north sustained minor fire damage, including two broken windows.

“Firefighters did a great job preventing the extension of the fire to the house directly to the north,” Schultz said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
