SAN JACINTO: Motorist backs into police motorcycle, arrested

23 Apr

A Hemet man was arrested after he backed his pickup truck into a police motorcycle on Saturday night, Riverside County sheriff’s reported.

Deputies conducting a DUI checkpoint on South San Jacinto Avenue saw the driver in a black pickup make an illegal U-turn in an attempt to avoid it. A motorcycle officer pursued and stopped the pickup. Its driver stopped in the parking lot of a tire store in the 2400 block of S. San Jacinto Avenue, then slowly backed into the front of the bike, a sheriff’s news release stated.

The motorcycle officer got off the bike before the truck hit it and was not injured. Deputies determined that the driver did not see the motorcycle before backing over it.

The driver of the truck, identified by sheriff’s as Otis Gibson, 58, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of marijuana and was booked into the Smith Correctional Facility, the release stated. The truck was impounded.
