Embattled Moreno Valley school board member Mike Rios on Tuesday, May 8, attended his first meeting after being released from jail on charges of pimping, pandering and rape.
He didn’t stay long. Rios listened to about 20 minutes of public comments about possible teacher layoffs before he left the dais and drove off without comment.
“Mr. Rios has decided to leave the meeting,” board president Tracey Vackar announced after calling a brief recess. “Sorry for the distraction.”
She and Superintendent Judy White had a brief conversation with Rios before he left.
The crowd applauded and cheered following Vackar’s announcement.
Rios missed the first hour of the meeting’s public session. He joined the meeting after the board recognized student achievements, which were first on the board’s agenda.
Rios had been ordered not to have contact with children as a condition of his release from jail as he awaits trial. He has pleaded not guilty.
