TUSTIN – A fire that threatened homes as it swept through more than three acres of brush on Saturday was likely caused by a person, according to fire investigators who don’t yet know if it was arson or an accident.
Eleven homes were evacuated as the fire approached; at one point, it got close enough to singe a back fence. It was first reported around 3:15 p.m. Saturday in the area of Tustin Ranch and Portola Parkway; firefighters had it contained about three hours later.
nvestigators have found nothing in the area that could have caused the fire, such as downed power lines, Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Marc Stone said. Because of that, they believe someone started it.
They have nothing yet to say whether the fire was set intentionally or was “a mistake, and then (they) freaked out and ran,” Stone said. He asked that anyone with information call investigators at 1-855-TIP-OCCS.
“The search is still on,” he said.
