A passerby flagged down a parking enforcement officer near Nielsen Way and Marine Street about 5:30 a.m. and said a body was on the beach near the water, said Sgt. Richard Lewis of the Santa Monica Police Department.
Lifeguards and police arrived at the scene and confirmed the body was that of a man, Lewis said. Investigators have yet to determine the identity or age of the man, who was wearing beach shorts and either a cycling or body surfing shirt.
There were no obvious signs of trauma, Lewis said. Coroner’s officials arrived at the scene Tuesday morning and will conduct an autopsy to determine a cause of death.
Robbery-homicide detectives were handling the case, which Lewis said was standard procedure for all death investigations in Santa Monica.
