SANTA ANA – A man was robbed of his wallet and then assaulted on the Santa Ana River Trail by three men suspected of being gang members, police said.
The victim had already agreed to hand over the wallet and two backpacks filled with clothing, but the men continued to punch and kick him, said Lt. Tammy Franks of the Santa Ana Police Department.
The robbery occurred near the 1500 block of North Fairview Street at about 8 p.m., she said.
The man was walking along the trail when he was approached by the three men.
One of the men pointed a gun at the victim and demanded that he hand over his property, Franks said. The victim gave them his wallet and backpacks and was then assaulted.
He was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for superficial injuries, she said.
