NEWPORT BEACH – A 72-year-old man died after a reported drowning in the waters off Balboa Island on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
Firefighters and lifeguards about 4:30 p.m. responded to reports of a drowning in the water off Bay Front near Collins Avenue, a written release from the Newport Beach Fire Department said.
The man who reported a possible drowning was swimming in the area when he saw someone in the water between a dock and a boat, officials said. He and another man reportedly pulled the person from the water and called 911.
The man was lying on the dock when authorities arrived and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Orange County coroner’s office late Tuesday night identified the man as Robert Legallee of Newport Beach.
Authorities say an autopsy will be performed later in the week to determine the cause of death.
