The Riverside County coroner’s office has identified the man killed by a sheriff’s deputy Saturday, July 14, in Jurupa Valley.
Alex Ayala, 53, of Fontana, died at 10:27 a.m. Saturday at Riverside Community Hospital, the coroner’s office said. His death came about 90 minutes after he was shot in the 3600 block of Pacific Avenue.
Ayala was a suspect in an attempted robbery, though the Sheriff’s Department has yet to release details about the crime.
According to a sheriff’s news release, deputies were called about 9 a.m. to a report of an attempted robbery. When they arrived, the suspect ran with a deputy in pursuit.
When the deputy caught up with him, the department said, the suspect said he had a gun and verbally threatened to shoot the deputy. The deputy then fired his pistol at the suspect, inflicting a mortal wound.
Anyone with information about the attempted robbery or the shooting is asked to call sheriff’s Investigator Jason Corey at 951-955-2777 or Investigator Joel Pabelico at 951-955-2600.
