LAGUNA BEACH – Two Marines stationed at Camp Pendleton were arrested on suspicion of shooting at several businesses and vehicle windows with BB guns.
Joseph Nahale, 20, of Fremont and Jesse Ivie, 20, of Gresham, Ore., were arrested early Sunday morning on suspicion of felony vandalism and of felony shooting at inhabitant vehicles, said Jim Amormino, spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. They have since been released.
Just before midnight Saturday, a woman, who was resting inside her car, heard gunshots and saw a red Ford Explorer at the Gelson’s shopping center on Crown Valley Parkway and Pacific Coast Highway in Dana Point, Amormino said.
Amormino said the woman works at the shopping center and was taking a break when her vehicle was shot at. The Association of Orange County Deputy Sheriffs agreed to pay for damages to her vehicle, he added.
A short time later, Laguna Beach police broadcast that several businesses and vehicles in their area had been shot at, Amormino added.
Laguna Beach Capt. Jason Kravetz said that about 12:15 a.m., police were dispatched to the 700 block of South Coast Highway for a burglar alarm. When police arrived, they found the front window shattered and noticed a window at Cottage Furnishings was also smashed.
Other businesses along Coast Highway, including Browne’s Flowers and Laguna Surf and Sport, also had shattered windows.
About 12:55 a.m. Sunday, deputies stopped the suspects on Pacific Coast Highway at Ritz Carlton Drive, Kravetz said.
Amormino said deputies arrested the two men, who are believed to have purchased BB guns at a Walmart store in south Orange County.
In total, 17 cars and eight businesses were damaged in Laguna Beach, and the damage is expected to be in excess of “thousands of dollars,” Kravetz said.
Other shattered windows were reported in Dana Point, San Clemente and Newport Beach.
