Woman injured in jump from overpass during pursuit

COSTA MESA – A woman was seriously injured Monday after she jumped from a freeway overpass during a police pursuit, authorities said.

The chase began shortly after 10:45 a.m., when an officer attempted to pull over the driver of a black pickup for unspecified vehicle code violations, a Costa Mesa police statement said.

The motorist refused to stop and began driving recklessly, police said, running red lights and passing vehicles on the shoulder of the roadway.

The driver stopped the pickup at the side of Bear Street at the I-405 overpass. Police say she got out of the vehicle, ran to the edge of the overpass and jumped off.

The woman was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana in critical condition. It wasn’t clear whether she was struck by vehicles on the freeway.

Police have not released the woman’s name, identifying her only as a 33-year-old whose last known address is in Costa Mesa.

Police temporarily closed several lanes of the northbound I-405 just north of Bristol Street, California Highway Patrol logs show.

Authorities say a records check showed that the woman was wanted in Los Angeles County on drug-related charges.
