COTO DE CAZA – A worker was killed Friday afternoon when a trench in which he was working collapsed, authorities said.

Fire crews responded to the 31600 block of Manzana Way shortly before 3:30 p.m. after a trench collapsed onto a worker who was installing a storm water pipe, said Capt. Jon Muir of the Orange County Fire Authority.

The worker was pronounced dead at the scene.

Orange County coroner’s office officials late Friday identified the worker as Blas Serrano-Escudero, 58, of Santa Ana.

The incident is believed to have occurred on private property. Muir said the man was a contract worker.

It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the trench to collapse. Along with the Orange County Fire Authority, the state Division of Occupational Safety and Health is also investigating.
