Tuesday morning a sidewalk memorial was growing at the intersection of Ellis and Main Street in Huntington Beach where 17-year-old Kiany Garcia and 19-year-old Robert Ruiz died Monday morning when their car hit a palm tree in front of a restaurant at the site. The two occupants of the 2007 Honda Civic were pronounced dead at the scene.

HUNTINGTON BEACH – The Orange County coroner’s office has identified two teenagers who died Monday morning when their car struck a tree.

Irvine resident Robert Ruiz, 19, was driving the 2007 Honda Civic westbound on Ellis Avenue around 5:20 a.m., officials said. Kiany Garcia, 17, was a passenger. Officials have not said where Garcia was from.

As the car turned to go southbound on Main Street, Ruiz lost control and the car struck a tree, officials said. Police said it appeared speed was a factor in the crash, and the impact split the car in two.

Investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, including toxicology tests to determine if the driver was impaired by drugs or alcohol, said Lt. Mitch O’Brien. Any witnesses with information may contact the Huntington Beach Police Department at 714-536-5666.
