A person was killed Monday in a mid-afternoon shooting in North Long Beach near Jordan High School, authorities said.
Officers responded to the area of Artesia Boulevard and Myrtle Avenue at about 1:50 p.m. for report of gunshots fired and found a male victim lying on the ground, said Long Beach Police Department spokeswoman Marlene Arrona. The victim, whose name and age were not released, was transported to a hospital, where he died from his injuries, she said.
The incident occurred about two blocks from Jordan High School but school was out of session Monday for the holiday.
Witnesses at a barber shop on Artesia Boulevard said they heard about two gunshots and saw the victim, a man in his 20s, walk from Myrtle Avenue onto the median on Artesia, where he turned and collapsed. His back was covered in blood, said a witness, who asked not to be named.
Resident Rey Torres was just leaving his house with his two small daughters to go to a nearby park when he heard a loud bang a block away.
”It’s scary that something like this can happen in the daytime,” said Torres, who has lived in the area for 14 years. “I don’t think we’ll be going to the park today.”
Residents said the area has had problems with gang activity.
Police did not release further details Monday. The investigation is ongoing.
