SANTA ANA – Two drivers were injured in a two-car crash Saturday night, and a handgun was found in the street when police officers were called, police said.

Santa Ana police responded to the crash at 11:15 p.m. after a Ford Explorer reportedly ran a red light at Civic Center Drive and English Street and collided with a black sedan.

When police arrived, they found the driver of the Explorer unconscious in the vehicle and a handgun in the street.

Paramedics originally thought the driver had sustained gunshot wounds, but none were found when he was taken to a trauma center. He was listed in critical condition Sunday morning, police said.

The driver of the black sedan also was taken to the hospital and was listed in serious condition Saturday night; police said they had no update on Sunday.

Two female passengers of the black sedan were unhurt, police said.

Police said the three passengers of the Explorer fled, but were later contacted and questioned. No arrests were made.

It was unclear if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, police said.

The crash is under investigation.
