Man arrested in relationship with 13-year-old he met on Facebook

orange county bail bondsSANTA ANA – Police on Friday morning arrested a man suspected of taking part in lewd acts with a 13-year-old girl he is accused of befriending on Facebook, as investigators search for other possible victims.

Manuel Arevalo Parada, 42, was arrested on suspicion of lewd acts with a minor after he met with the girl multiple times during a three to four month period, police said.

Officers were called Thursday to Carr Intermediate School to investigate a report of abuse of a student. During interviews with the girl, officers and investigators learned of her relationship with Parada, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.

Police believe Parada “friended” the girl on Facebook when she was 12, telling her he was in his mid-20s. They allege that he first met her in person four months ago when he showed up at a family function and since then had met with her several other times and had been driving her to school twice a week.

The girl’s family wasn’t aware of the relationship, Bertagna said. Police allege that the girl thought of Parada as her boyfriend.

“Parents need to know who their kids are communicating with on the Internet,” Bertagna said. “This guy was a predator.”

Authorities are asking anyone with information or who believes they were a victim to contact Orange County Crime Stoppers at 855-TIP-OCCS.

SANTA ANA – Three people were charged Monday with luring a 17-year-old girl into prostitution through Facebook, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office said.

Kristian Adway, 19; Dejon Pierre Moore, 19; and Jennifer Kaye Moeggenberg, 23, face charges for human trafficking, pandering of a minor over 16 and other offenses.

Moore also has a prior strike conviction for a residential burglary in Los Angeles County in 2012, prosecutors said.

Moore is being held on $1 million bail, and Adway and Moeggenberg are being held on $250,000 bail. They will be arraigned Oct. 18 at the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana.

If convicted, Moore faces 17 years and 8 months to life in state prison, Adway faces a 14-year sentence, and Moeggenberg could be sentenced to a maximum of 12 years.

Prosecutors contend Moore contacted the girl on Facebook and used force and fear to induce her to work for him as a prostitute.

In addition, Moore, Adway, and Moeggenberg are accused of taking sexually suggestive photos of the girl and posting advertisements on websites known for prostitution. The trio was arrested in September by Anaheim police.

Modesto teacher resigns, moves in with 18-year-old student

A teacher from a high school in Modesto has resigned, left his wife and moved in with his girlfriend, an 18-year-old student.

The Enochs High School teacher and the student said they did not have a physical relationship until the day the girl turned 18. The girl’s mother said she has proof that their relationship began sooner. She said she has text messages, phone records and a police report to help build her case.

So far, no arrests have been made. Investigators are trying to figure out whether or not the teacher had inappropriate contact with the student when she was underage.

The teacher, James Hooker, has left his wife and children. He has a daughter who is a junior at Enochs High School.

In an interview with the Modesto Bee, Hooker said, “In making our choice, we’ve hurt a lot of people. We keep asking ourselves, ‘Do we make everyone else happy or do we follow our hearts?’ ”

The paper reported that the girl’s mother has waged a public campaign on Facebook since her daughter moved in with Hooker last week.

T.J. Lane, 17-Year-Old Suspect In Ohio School Shooting, ‘Not Well,’ Prosecutor Says

CHARDON, Ohio — The 17-year-old suspect in a deadly rampage at an Ohio high school has appeared in juvenile court as the community grieves with relatives of the three students killed.

A prosecutor says suspect T.J. Lane admitted taking a .22-caliber pistol to Chardon High and firing 10 shots at a group of students sitting at a cafeteria table Monday.

A judge ordered Lane held for at least 15 days. The court hearing Tuesday offered few answers about what prompted the shootings.

A prosecutor described Lane as “someone who’s not well” and said the teen didn’t know the victims but chose them randomly.

A fourth student who was hurt remained hospitalized in serious condition late Tuesday. Police said an injured Chardon student was released from the hospital and was home with her family.
