Former teacher sentenced for sex with student

Article Tab: Scott Adrian Peterson's booking photo.SANTA ANA – A former Orange High School Spanish teacher was sentenced Friday to 16 months in jail for having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student, whom prosecutors said he regularly met for sex in an Orange riverbed and at a motel.

Scott Adrian Peterson, 50, pleaded guilty in August to two felony counts of unlawful sexual intercourse, four felony counts of oral copulation with a minor and two felony counts of sexual penetration of a minor by a foreign object, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office said.

Peterson was sentenced to four years and four months in state prison; however, under new state sentencing laws, Superior Court Judge Robert Fitzgerald split his sentence, requiring Peterson to serve 16 months in jail followed by three years of mandatory supervision.

The victim, who is now 19 and has continued a relationship with Peterson, wept at the sentencing.

Peterson’s attorney Andrew Lloyd said afterward that she told him she felt responsible for what happened “because she pushed the relationship and wishes today that she had not been so impatient and waited just a handful of months to make it legal.”

Peterson met the student at Orange High School and groomed the victim by spending time with her at Disneyland and other social events, according to prosecutors.

Starting in April 2010, he regularly met the girl for sex, sent her sexually explicit text messages and photographs of the two of them, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

The girl’s family notified police after reportedly discovering the text messages on her phone. Authorities informed the school district, and Peterson was not brought back to teach at the campus. He was arrested Dec. 2, 2010, after police saw him leave a riverbed shortly after the girl.

At one time, Peterson was a freelance photographer used by some Orange County Register weekly newspapers. His last assignment was in summer of 2010, before the criminal allegations came to light.

Former high school teacher guilty in sex with student

Article Tab: Scott Peterson booking photoSANTA ANA – A former Orange High School teacher was convicted Monday of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student, authorities said.

Scott Adrian Peterson, 50, agreed to a court offer requiring him to plead guilty to two felony counts of unlawful sexual intercourse, four felony counts of oral copulation with a minor and two felony counts of sexual penetration by a foreign object of a minor, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office said.

Peterson on Oct. 5 is expected to be sentenced to four years and four months in state prison. However, under new state sentencing laws, the court will likely split his sentence, requiring that he serve 16 months in jail followed by three years of mandatory supervision, prosecutors said.

Authorities believe that Peterson met the 17-year-old girl while working at Orange High School and spent time with her at Disneyland and at other off-campus social events.

Prosecutors allege that beginning in April 2010, Peterson regularly met the girl at a motel and in an Orange riverbed to carry out a sexual relationship, sent her text messages about their relationship and took sexually explicit photographs of the two of them.

The girl’s family notified police after reportedly discovering a sexual text message on her phone. Authorities informed the school district, and Peterson was not brought back to teach at the campus. He was arrested Dec. 2, 2010, after police say they saw him leaving a riverbed shortly after the girl.

At one time, Peterson was a freelance photographer used by some Orange County Register weekly newspapers. His last assignment was in summer of 2010, before the criminal allegations came to light.

7th L.A. school employee arrested on sex-related accusation

Corey HoganA seventh L.A. school employee has been arrested on sex-related accusations.

The latest case involves a teacher who has been arrested on suspicion of having sex with a 17-year-old female student, police said Tuesday.

There has been a flurry of arrests of Los Angeles-area schoolteachers and employees  in recent weeks. Officials said they believe the cases were a result of increased awareness following the high-profile arrest of teacher Mark Berndt atMiramonte Elementary School.

Berndt has been charged with photographing blindfolded and gagged students who were allegedly fed spoonfuls of his semen.

Last week, authorities announced the arrest of a Roosevelt High School Spanish teacher on suspicion of having sex with two teenage boys. Gabriela Cortez, 42, was arrested on suspicion of unlawful sexual intercourse.

Montebello police alleged that she had lengthy sexual relationships with the boys between 2008 and 2010. One of the teenagers, now 18, reported the teacher last week to police in Montebello, where she lives, said Chief Kevin McClure. After learning of the allegation, school officials immediately removed her from the classroom.

In the latest case, Corey Hogan, 32, the band director at George Washington Preparatory High School, was arrested after the student and her mother told police that the girl agreed to have sex with Hogan at his home, the Hawthorne Police Department said.

The sex allegedly took place during the football season after Hogan gave the girl and other students a ride home, police said in a statement.

After the other students were dropped off, the girl agreed to go to Hogan’s Hawthorne home, police said.

Hogan was arrested Monday at the high school.

Hogan was released Tuesday afternoon after posting $100,000 bail, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department online booking records.

Law enforcement officials stressed that they don’t believe that more abuse is occurring. Rather, the Miramonte episode has sparked some people to come forward and others to be more watchful, they say.

“As a community, people are coming together and are hyper-vigilant about any other perpetrators. Everything is now being reported,” Pia Escudero, who directs L.A. Unified’s mental health and crisis counseling services, told The Times last week.

Teacher had sexual relationship with boys for 2 years, police say

Teacher accused

Police allege that a Roosevelt High School teacher had a sexual relationship with two boys for two years.

Gabriela Cortez, a 42-year-old Spanish teacher at the Boyle Heights campus, was booked Thursday on suspicion of unlawful sexual intercourse.

Police in Montebello, where Cortez lives, allege that she had lengthy sexual relationships with the boys between 2008 and 2010. One of the youths, now 18, reported the teacher last week, said Police Chief Kevin McClure.

After learning of the allegation, school officials immediately removed her from the classroom.

Over the last three weeks, six employees of the Los Angeles Unified School District have been booked on suspicion of sex-related crimes, while several others have been pulled from the classroom amid investigations.

The media coverage after the arrest of Miramonte Elementary School teacher Mark Berndt, who is accused of spoon-feeding his semen to blindfolded children, has intensified discussion among school officials, parents and children about abuse.

“As a community, people are coming together and are hyper-vigilant about any other perpetrators. Everything is now being reported,” said Pia Escudero, who directs L.A. Unified’s mental health and crisis counseling services.

The district has seen an uptick in allegations of adult sexual misconduct in recent weeks. Counselors have been dispatched to several campuses — including 45 at Miramonte, one for every classroom.

Teacher accused of having sex with students was removed last week

A 42-year-old teacher at Roosevelt High School arrested on suspicion of having sex with two teenage students was pulled from the classroom last week when the initial allegation was made, according to a spokesman for the nonprofit education group that oversees the school.

Montebello teacherGabriela Cortez, of Montebello, was taken into custody Wednesday evening by Montebello police after they interviewed two teenage male students she allegedly had sexual relationships with in recent years, said Montebello Police Chief Kevin McClure.

Cortez was immediately removed from her classroom at the Law and Government Academy when the allegation was reported Feb. 15, said Patrick Sinclair, spokesman for the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools. The academy is located at Roosevelt High School.

Sinclair said that in the wake of the arrest, parents will receive automated calls Thursday in Spanish and English informing them of the incident. A letter will also be sent to the homes of students. Faculty members at the campus were to be briefed Thursday.

One of the students reported the alleged crime to police after the teacher broke off their relationship, police said. A subsequent police investigation uncovered a second alleged victim, police said. Both are now legally adults.

Montebello police investigated the case because many of the alleged acts occurred in the city.

Detectives are continuing to investigate and said they suspect there may be additional victims.

Montebello police detectives will formally present their investigation to prosecutors Thursday. The teacher was booked into the Montebello city jail on suspicion of having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, a felony. She is free on $140,000 bail.
